THERMO-SHIELD® ROOF COATS
DESCRIPTION
THERMO-SHIELD® Roof Coats are highly efficient, energy-saving, flexible coatings, made from a water-based pure acrylic resin system filled with vacuumed sodium borosilicate ceramic micro spheres of less than 100 microns in size. Each micro sphere acts as a sealed cell and the entire mastic acts as a thermally efficient blanket covering the entire structure. These coatings are non-toxic, friendly to the environment, and form a monolithic (seamless) membrane that bridges hairline cracks. They are completely washable and resist many harsh chemicals. THERMO-SHIELD® Roof Coats have high reflectance and high emittance as well as a very low conductivity value. THERMO-SHIELD® Roof Coats greatly reduce thermal shock and heat penetration by keeping roof surfaces much cooler in hot summer weather. They offer UV protection and low VOC's. They display excellent dirt pick-up resistance and retain their flexibility after aging. THERMO-SHIELD® Roof Coats reduce noise transmission and have an effective use range from -40 Deg C (-40 Deg F) to 375 Deg C (700 Deg F).
INSULATION
Although these Roof Coats enjoy very low Conductance (0.05 W/mK), it is the combination of their high Reflectance (82%), high Emittance (94%) and Endothermic Effect® what makes them a very good choice for protecting your roofs from heat buildup. Unlike typical mass insulation, where heat conduction is just slowed down, this technology keeps the heat out. Sun light only produces heat when it is absorbed by the roof surface, and being able to keep heat from forming into the surface of the roof is a very effective way to insulate. The cooling process of Endothermic Effect® ensures that the surface continues to insulate, even if Reflectance is diminished with aging, dust build-up or darker colors
ADHESION
Excellent adhesion to a wide variety of substrates: wood, urethane foam, galvanized steel, aluminum, asphalt roof shingles, concrete, asbestos and others.
VARIABLE PERMEABILITY
This feature, unique to THERMO-SHIELD®, allows the membrane to perform unlike any other coating. When conditions are dry, the polymers shrink and open pores to allow trapped water vapor to breathe out of the substrate, but when conditions are wet (raining, ponding of water, etc.), the polymers swell, close the pores, and the entire membrane becomes watertight.
THERMO-SHIELD® is a charter member of the U.S. Government Energy Star Roof Program. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) state the following benefits are derived from the use of reflective coatings:

AMERICAN ASTM TESTS
TENSILE STRENGTH ASTM D-412 *pdf 9
- Tensile stress at 25% elongation is 525 psi

- Important: Comparing these results to those in the above TENSILE STRENGTH test shows that the roof coating actually gets stronger and more durable with age.
- Both tests show the roof coating has 8.8 perm. which exceeds requirements for a class 1 rating. This astounding permeability is 160 times greater than one of our main competitors claiming to produce a permeable paint.
WATER ABSORPTION - ASTM D-570 *pdf 12
- After water saturation for 5 weeks, there were no changes on the roof coating after reconditioning .The roof coating will stand up to ponding water, yet has the ability to breathe out trapped water vapor in dry weather (Based on permeability tests). This allows waterproofing without blistering.

- The roof coating passed the 90° bend test at -37° C, displaying flexibility at extremely cold temperatures.

- Note: Some specialists say the ASTM formula for R-value in this test "R = 1/.K" is oversimplified and does not take enough information into consideration
THERMO-SHIELD® roof coating is available with a CLASS A fire resistant rating. NOTE: This is a special Class-A formula, not our standard formula.

The THERMO-SHIELD® Protections
THERMO-SHIELD® was developed in order to protect materials from heat. By implementing ceramic bubbles in a vacuum which are only a fraction of a millimeter in size, engineers were successful in making sure that the coating could withstand temperature fluctuations of more than 2,000° C.
After it was released for civilian use, the thermal ceramic shield was further developed especially for the requirements of construction and housing whereby other important features were added. The THERMO-SHIELD® material which resembles paint, is an energy saving, long-term protection and coloration system all in one.
THERMO-SHIELD® is the most advanced insulative ceramic coating on the market. THERMO-SHIELD® is the product of seven years of relentless research to engineer the perfect ceramic coating. The benefits of using THERMO-SHIELD® are astounding and verifiable.

How Does THERMO-SHIELD® Work
The energy saving THERMO-SHIELD® coating consists of a special water-based bonding agent, which contains millions of very small vacuum glass ceramic bubbles (20 to 120 Micrometers). After drying, the film is polymerized to a 0.3mm strong, elastic, sealed but moisture permeable structure (coating).
The characteristics of this coating ensure the energy-saving feature. It sets itself apart from traditional notions which are based on the reduction of energy loss. The bubbles "filter" the thermal flow in infrared low temperatures and reflect and disperses up to 25 percent of the heat. In this way, the surface of the coating radiates three times less heat than brick or concrete for example.
The coating's water permeability with a sufficient level of vapor diffusion ("breathing activity") guarantees the drying of building materials and increases their actual thermal resistance. In addition, heat loss is reduced by 7 to 9 percent. This results in a complex of various physical effects that can all be found within the thin coating.
The scientific term for this is: "Oberflächenbeschichtung mit endothermischen Effekten®" "Surface coating with endo-thermal effects". With that, the heat loss in a building protected by THERMO-SHIELD® is reduced and the building's heating costs are lowered by 20 to 30 percent. Air-conditioning costs in the Summer or in hot climate zones can be reduced by 30 to 60 percent in those buildings where no insulation was used.
Secrets of THERMO-SHIELD®
1) Vacuumed Ceramic Micro-Spheres
THERMO-SHIELD® contains hollow ceramic micro-spheres (40% by volume), which allow coatings to reflect about 83% of solar light (Coatings reflect 85% of infrared, which is the region of the spectrum responsible for over 90% of solar heat). The 3M Corporation developed these micro-spheres to act as optimal insulators. Other insulative paints use non-hollow ceramic micro-sphere, which are not optimal insulators. This is one reason why THERMO-SHIELD® outperformed all other insulative coats in a 3 year study conducted at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
2) The Ultimate Resins
THERMO-SHIELD® uses special Acrylic Elastomeric Resins developed in conjunction with Romm and Haas, a leading, high-end resin supplier. Engineering the perfect resin to suspend the ceramic micro-spheres, while still providing excellent adhesion to most surfaces took years. Additionally, the resins needed to have a high tensile strength, be waterproof, and withstand the most extreme weather conditions. The Resins that were eventually developed for THERMO-SHIELD® do all of this and more. The most unique quality of the resins is called "Variable Permeability". When conditions are wet, the resin polymers swell up, becoming completely water-tight. When conditions are dry, the pores open up, and trapped moisture can breathe out. This is very important. Other coating products are watertight all the time. Moisture will work up beneath the surface and become trapped under the waterproof material. When this moisture heats up, it turns water to vapor, expanding many times, causing blistering or destroying adhesion; or it freezes which also breaks down the adhesion, leading to coating failure.
3) The Finest Pigments Available
The white pigments in THERMO-SHIELD® are made from Titanium Dioxide and Aluminum Tri-Hydrate. These pigments are highly durable, reflective, fire resistant, and resist breakdown. These superb pigments are one reason why, in JIS tests, THERMO-SHIELD® showed the least color fading of any coating tested for the Japanese market. Many competitors use cheap pigments which break down, resulting in chalkiness, short life and early fading.
